While HX can be hosted via a non-dedicated server, it is highly unrecommended. It's generally less stable than dedicated servers, and whoever the host is will have virtually no lag while other players are on the same playing field with some latency. Non-dedicated servers also have a tendency to break mods as well, because mod behavior is only designed to be seen from the client's POV, while non-dedicated server hosts are technically not clients.

HX is not compatible with vanilla campaigns, and especially not with gameplay mods (i.e Shifter, Biomod, Vanilla Matters, etc). Vanilla campaigns must be modded to work within HX (varying with difficulty depending on the campaign and its build quality). Gameplay mods will definitely not be compatible, as they modify Deus Ex's codebase directly. HX is only technically designed to work with vanilla's codebase, so any major changes done to systems in gameplay mods will cause HX to break. Currently, two (unfinished) campaign conversions exist, of the mods Redsun2020 and ZODIAC.

HX does not have saves, and probably will not. Deus Ex's save system is much too complicated to translate into Unreal Engine 1's netcode, and simply isn't worth the time to put in.

Saving the actual state of the map in multiplayer is only possible during map transitions, so any arbitrary save feature would at least require a map reload, which in turn, due to the open come and go nature of HX would also reset players to their starting positions. Such savegames would also be bound to a particular server type, so you couldn't switch between dedicated and listen server. Player making the savegames would also need to be logged in as admin on the server, etc. In other words: Any such save feature, would just feel terrible, and quite frankly I really do enjoy just cold starting the game on later missions and try getting your gear together. I also do enjoy that the reload-retry-repeat playstyle I default to in singleplayer is not possible and I just have that option out of my head. That way I also end up straying a little further away from my typical -- already repeated -- choices and end up discovering unknown to me stuff.

So what I rather have in mind, is some sort of autosave/resume feature, which would at the start of each mission save aside player inventories and gamestate, which is entirely independend from any map state (map state of prior mission won't matter anymore, and the state of the maps of the new mission is entire untouched). These resumes will most likely be interexchangeable between listen and dedicated servers, probably mostly (within limits) forward compatible with later HX releases. They would also be quite minimal, so any accumulation of these will never take up much space, so stuff like automatic purging will not be required.

It might fit your use case/need to actually rum the dedicated server inside a VM and just freeze or snapshot the VM instead to get some sort of makeshift save feature in the meanwhile.

HX. It's is not an acronym. That beeing said, the H originated from the first letter of my long nickname Hanfling, and the added X in analogy to the DX abbreviation. Also: please don't call it dxhx.

How can I find other players or get involved in the community?

Try the #coop channel on the DX:HQ discord.

Can I watch a server list online?

Yes, visit the corresponding 333 networks page.

Whats the difference between a listen and a dedicated server?

A listen server will allow you to host and play a game in the same instance, whereas a dedicated server is "headless", and you need to start the game a second time to join the dedicated server. It general it is recommended that you use a dedicated server instead of a listen server.

How can I host a server?

See Hosting a Server.

Can HX be hosted via a non-dedicated server?

While HX can be hosted via a non-dedicated server, it is highly unrecommended. It's generally less stable than dedicated servers, and whoever the host is will have virtually no lag while other players are on the same playing field with some latency. Non-dedicated servers also have a tendency to break mods as well, because mod behavior is only designed to be seen from the client's POV, while non-dedicated server hosts are technically not clients.

Can it be played on LAN?

Yes, HX supports both LAN and Internet functionality.

Is HX compatible with mod X?

Does HX support savegames?

HX does not have savegames, probably never will, but gets some autosave/resume on mission start feature in the future.

What does HX stand for?

HX. It's is not an acronym. That beeing said, the H originated from the first letter of my long nickname Hanfling, and the added X in analogy to the DX abbreviation. Also: please don't call it dxhx.
